Tiafoe Advances Over Shelton
In a battle of two of the most entertaining players on Tour, former semifinalist Frances Tiafoe avenged a loss to fellow American Ben Shelton at the US Open on Friday, defeating his good friend 4-6, 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3.
Needing four hours and three minutes to advance, Tiafoe used his footwork and forehand to offset the power of his younger opponent.
Striking five aces and winning 76 perfect of his first serve points, Tiafoe picked up his first victory against Shelton in three meetings.
Shelton, who reached the semifinals last year, will drop to No. 16 in the world after the event.
Tiafoe’s quest for a first Grand Slam continues next against either No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic or National Bank Open winner Alexi Popyrin.
