French Open 2024: Alcaraz Vs. Sinner
Friday’s action at the French Open will feature a duel between tennis’s future. Newly crowned world No. 1 Jannik Sinner will face two-time Major winner Carlos Alcaraz for a place in the French Open finals.
Odd’s on this enticing match can be viewed at Betway. Former World No. 1 and US Open winner Andy Roddick recently commented on this upcoming encounter, stating that:
“For me, this is the most open Roland-Garros in two decades. The current betting favourite – Carlos Alcaraz – has barely played tennis in the past six weeks with a forearm injury, Novak Djokovic entering a 250 the week before a slam shows a level of concern, (and now that he’s out and injured) and the third favourite is Jannik Sinner, who is dealing with something that they saw on an MRI with a hip, which has all been pretty vague.”
Needless to say, Roddick’s analysis is spot on. Men’s tennis has been dominated by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic for over 20 years.
With Federer retired, Nadal on the brink of retirement and Djokovic headed into knee surgery this week, a changing of the guard is here to stay.
The Match Up
Heading into Friday’s tussle, Alcaraz and Sinner are tied at four wins a piece. Alcaraz won their last meeting on Tour in Indian Wells earlier this year, while Sinner captured the pair’s lone clay-court encounter in Umag in 2022.
Both players have had sparse clay-court preparation leading into Roland Garros this year, with Alcaraz missing Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Rome, and Sinner only playing in Madrid and Monaco.
Heading into the semifinal clash, both players have only lost one set, with Alcaraz having a much tougher road in terms of the competition. The Spaniard has already defeated No. 27 seed Sebastian Korda, No. 21 seed Felix Auger-Alassime and No. 9 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Alcaraz is playing great and should advance to the final in four or five sets.
For Sinner, he has shown moments throughout the fortnight that the hip injury that kept him out of action earlier this year has not healed. That said, the lanky Italian is a formidable opponent and knows how to play against Alcaraz.
It is clear that Friday’s match between Alcaraz and Sinner could be the contest of the tournament.
The likes of Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud and Alex de Minaur are still in the event, and one of these great players will be opposite either Alcaraz or Sinner in Sunday’s championship match.
