Fonseca Wins First-Ever Match at 2025 BNP Paribas Open
Upstart Brazilian Joao Fonseca captured his first-ever victory at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California on Thursday, defeating Jacob Fearnley from Britain 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.
Needing two hours to advance, Fonseca delivered 17 winners, hit three aces, won 69 percent of his first serve points and broke his opponent on four occasions.
Winning his first career title in Buenos Aires, Argentina earlier this year, Fonseca is the youngest player in the top 100 at 18-years-old.
The Rio de Janeiro native will next face No. 13 seed Jack Draper for a place in the third round.
Fonseca is currently ranked No. 77 in the world.
Other results on the day included Rinky Hijikata dismissing Alexander Shevchenko 6-1, 6-3.
Matches that are still to come on Thursday will feature Nick Kyrgios, Gael Monfils, David Goffin, Learner Tien and Jakub Mensik.
Kenin Advances to Round Two
Former Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin raced into the second round in Indian Wells on Thursday, dismissing Maddison Inglis from Australia 6-2, 6-1.
In a match that lasted one hour and 10 minutes, Kenin hit two aces, won 83 percent of her first serve points and broke serve on five occasions.
The American, who is currently ranked No. 28 in the world, has won 21 titles throughout her impressive career.
Kenin will next face No. 12 seed Daria Kasatkina for a place in round three.
Other winners on the day included Polina Kudermetova and Lucia Bronzetti.
Emma Raducanu, Belinda Bencic, Anna Kalinskaya and McCartney Kessler will also play their first round matches on Thursday.
