Fonseca Stuns Rublev at 2025 Australian Open; Rybakina Advances to Round Two
The future is now for Joao Fonseca. The 18-year-old from Rio de Janeiro poured in a spectacular Grand Slam debut on Tuesday in Melbourne, Australia, defeating No. 9 Andrey Rublev 7-6(1), 6-3, 7-6(5) in two hours and 23 minutes.
Using his rocket forehand to great effect, Fonseca hit 51 winners, won 79 percent of his first serve points and added 14 aces to his impressive victory.
The Brazilian, who is up to No. 98 in the world in latest rankings, is the youngest player in the top 100.
Fonseca, will next face Lorenzo Sonego from Italy. The veteran defeated former Australian Open winner Stan Wawrinka in four sets in round one.
Other results on the day saw No. 4 seed Taylor Fritz, No. 5 seed Daniil Medvedev, No. 8 seed Alex de Minaur, No. 13 seed Holger Rune, No. 16 seed Lorenzo Musetti, No. 18 seed Hubert Hurkacz, No. 19 seed Karen Khachanov, No. 21 seed Ben Shelton and No. 31 seed Francisco Cerundolo all advance to the second round.
Other notable winners on the day included Matteo Berrettini, Gael Monfils and Canadian Denis Shapovalov.
Wednesday’s schedule will feature No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev, No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz and No. 7 seed Novak Djokovic.
Rybakina Leads Women’s Winners
On the women’s side, former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina needed only 53 minutes to storm past Emerson Jones of Australia 6-1, 6-1.
Rybakina hit 11 aces, won 78 percent of her first serve points and broke her 16-year-old opponent on five occasions.
The No. 6 seed will next face Iva Jovic from the United States. Jovic ousted Nuria Parrizas Diaz 6-2, 6-1.
Other women’s results on Day 3 included: No. 4 seed Jasmine Paolini, No. 8 seed Emma Navvaro, No. 9 seed Daria Kasatkina, No. 15 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia, No. 19 seed Madison Keys, No. 22 seed Katie Boulter, No. 24 seed Yulia Putintseva, and No. 32 seed Dayana Yastremska all advancing to the second round.
Former US Open winner Emma Raducanu also reached the second round. She defeated No. 26 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-6(4), 7-6(2). Amanda Anisamova and three-time Major finalist Ons Jabeur posted first-round wins in straight sets.
Wednesday’s action in Melbourne will be highlighted by top seed Aryna Sabalenka, No. 3 seed Coco Gauff and No. 7 Jessica Pegula.
