Australian Open—Melbourne, Australia
The magical career or Roger Federer continued on Sunday at the Australian Open when the 36-year-old captured his 20th Major title with a 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Marin Cilic on Sunday.
Slamming 24 aces and hitting 41 winners, Federer sealed his win after three hours and three minutes on court. After Cilic managed to claw back in set four and force a final set for the title, Federer went into overdrive to break serve on two occasions and win a very high 73 percent of his second serve points.
Winning his 96th career title, Federer now owns six career titles in Melbourne Park. The most successful men’s tennis player ever also defended his efforts from last year, where he defeated current world No. 1 Rafael Nadal in five sets.
Cilic, who was aiming to win his second career Grand Slam after winning the US Open in 2014, defeated Nadal in the quarterfinals of the event.
Federer is next slated to compete in Dubai toward the end of February.
