World No. 1 Novak Djokovic won his 29th career Masters 1000 title in Madrid, Spain on Sunday, defeating Andy Murray 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Beginning the match in dominating fashion, Djokovic looked to be on his way to an easy straight set victory before Murray improved the depth of his return game and beefed up his first serve percentage to force a deciding set. With everything to play for, Djokovic grew his lead to 5-2 before needing over 13 minutes in the final game to capture the title.
Tying Pete Sampras and Bjorn Borg with 64 career titles, Djokovic now stands with more than double the points of new world No. 2 Roger Federer. Murray will drop to No. 3 in the world on Monday, but with minimal points to defend next week in Rome, he will likely regain the second seed for Roland Garros by the end of the week.
