Wednesday’s action at the US Open featured 23-time Major winner Novak Djokovic cruise into the third round. Defeating Bernabe Zapata Miralles 6-4, 6-1, 6-1, Djokovic will next face Laslo Djere.
The legendary Serb will return to No. 1 in the world after the US Open, irrespective of his result.
Elsewhere, Dominic Stricker upset No. 7 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in five, thrilling sets, while No. 22 seed Adrian Mannarino, Aslan Karatsev and Ben Shelton all progressed to the third round.
Gauff Continues to Roll
On the women’s side, No. 6 seed Coco Gauff poured in an impressive performance to oust 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva 6-3, 6-2. The 19-year-old will next face fellow American Danielle Collins.
Other results on the day included top seed Iga Swiatek, No. 4 seed Elena Rybakina, No. 10 seed Karolina Muchova, No. 15 seed Belinda Bencic, No. 18 seed Victoria Azarenka, No. 32 Elise Mertens and Taylor Townsend all reaching the round of 32.
Townsend upset No. 19 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia.
Still to come on Wednesday, Frances Tiafoe, Caroline Wozniacki, and Taylor Fritz will play their second round matches.
Thursday’s schedule in Flushing Meadows will highlight Carlos Alcaraz, Aryna Sabalenka, Jannik Sinner and Jessica Pegula.
