Cerundolo Upsets Djokovic at French Open
Defending champion Novak Djokovic survived another five set tussle at the French Open on Monday, ousting Francisco Cerundolo 6-1, 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
In a match that lasted four hours and 40 minutes, Djokovic used his clay-court experience to overcome his inspired opponent. Striking 52 winners and hitting six aces, the No. 1 seed also broke Roger Federer’s record for most Grand Slam singles victories.
Djokovic, who played until 4am in the previous match against Lorenzo Musetti, experienced right knee pain throughout his encounter with Cerundolo. The Serb will next face either No. 7 seed Casper Ruud or No. 12 seed Taylor Fritz.
Medvedev Ousted
In other results, No. 5 seed Daniil Medvedev was sent packing by No. 11 seed Alex de Minaur, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3.
De Minaur will next face either No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev or No. 13 seed Holger Rune.
Sabalenka Reaches Quarterfinals
No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka reached the quarterfinals of the French Open on Monday, easily dispatching Emma Navvaro 6-2, 6-3. Sabalenka will next face 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva for a semifinal spot.
Elsewhere, No. 4 seed Elena Rybakina dismissed Elina Svitolina 6-4, 6-3.
Tuesday’s action at the French Open will feature Iga Swiatek, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
