US Open—Flushing Meadows, New York
Dimitrov, Badosa Reach US Open Quarterfinals
Sunday’s schedule of play at the US Open featured Russian Andrey Rublev failing to reach his 11th Grand Slam quarterfinal, losing to Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 7-6(3), 1-6, 3-6, 6-3.
Needing three hours and 39 minutes to advance, Dimitrov used his forehand and powerful first serve to offset the rhythm of his athletic opponent.
Tying his head-to-head with Rublev at 4-all, Dimitrov will look to reach his fourth career Major semifinal when he faces the winner of tonight’s blockbuster match between No. 20 seed Frances Tiafoe and No. 28 seed Alexi Popyrin.
Tiafoe took out No. 13 seed Ben Shelton in the third round, while Popyrin defeated defending champion Novak Djokovic in the previous round.
In other results, No. 12 seed Taylor Fritz defeated No. 8 seed Casper Ruud 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2. Fritz has now reached the US Open quarterfinals two years in a row.
The American will next face either No. 4 seed Alexader Zverev or Brandon Nakashima.
Badosa Advances to Quarterfinals
Elsewhere, Spaniard Paula Badosa reached the quarterfinals after dispatching Yafan Wang 6-1, 6-2.
Winning the title in Washington, D.C. earlier this summer, Badosa will await defending champion No. 3 seed Coco Gauff or Emma Navarro.
Other matches that are still to come on Sunday will include No. 7 seed Qinwen Zheng taking on No. 24 seed Donna Vekic and No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka against No. 33 seed Elise Mertens.
