Dimitrov Advances in Brisbane; Osaka Wins in Auckland; Nishikori Prevails in Hong Kong
Defending champion Grigor Dimitrov advanced to the quarterfinals of the Brisbane International on Wednesday, defeating wildcard Aleksandar Vukic 6-2, 7-6(5).
Needing one hour and 23 minutes to advance, Dimitrov hit 12 aces, won 94 percent of his first serve points and broke serve on two occasions.
Dismissing Holger Rune in last year’s final, Dimitrov will next face No. 8 seed Jordan Thompson for a place in the semifinals.
Thompson dispatched Alex Michelsen 7-5, 6-3 earlier in the day.
Other winners on Day 3 saw Nicolas Jarry and Jiri Lehecka advancing in straight sets.
Thursday’s schedule in Brisbane will feature top seed Novak Djokovic taking on Gael Monfils.
Women’s results on Wednesday saw No. 2 seed Emma Navarro crash out of the event, losing to Kimberly Birrell 7-5, 7-5.
Other winners on the day saw No. 3 seed Daria Kasatkina, No. 10 seed Victoria Azarenka and No. 12 seed Linda Noskova reaching the round of 16.
On Thursday, top seed Aryna Sabalenka and No. 8 seed Mirra Andreeva will return to the court in hopes of reaching the quarterfinals in their respective second round matches.
Sabalenka will face No. 15 seed Yulia Putintseva and Andreeva will take on Noskova.

Four-time former Major winner Naomi Osaka took another step toward regaining a top 10 ranking by reaching the quarterfinals of the ASB Classic on Wednesday.
Defeating Julia Grabher 7-5, 6-3, Osaka hit five aces, won 77 percent of her first serve points, and broke her Austrian opponent on two occasions.
Osaka will next face either Jodie Burrage or Hailey Baptiste for a place in the semifinals.
Other winners on the day saw No. 5 seed Clara Tauson, No. 8 seed Katie Volynets and American Bernarda Pera reaching the final eight.
Thursday’s action will feature top seed Madison Keys taking on Jaqueline Cristian.

Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open—Hong Kong
Former world No. 4 Kei Nishikori continued to show some great form this week in Hong Kong, China, defeating No. 3 seed Karen Khachanov 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Needing two hours and nine minutes to prevail, Nishikori used his off-the-rise game and great returns to offset his top 20 opponent.
Nishikori will next face Brit Cameron Norrie for a place in the semifinals. Norrie overcame the challenge of Italian Lorenzo Sonego, dismissing the world No. 53, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
Other winners on the day included No. 4 seed Arthur Fils and Alexandre Muller.
On Thursday, top seed Andrey Rublev and No. 2 seed Lorenzo Musetti will be in action.
