Former US Open winner Marin Cilic defeated No. 3 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6(2), 6-3 on Sunday to claim the title in Stuttgart, Germany. Winning his 19th career title, Cilic struck seven aces, won 77 percent of his first serve points and broke serve on two occasions.
Improving to 3-0 against Auger-Aliassime in career meetings, Cilic will move up to No. 37 in the world on Monday.
Cilic also captured his first title in three years. The previous for the Czech star came in London in 2018.
Auger-Aliassime, who was aiming to win his first career title, fell to 0-8 in championship matches. The 20-year-old will remain at No. 21 in the world when Monday’s rankings are released.
