– Canada takes on Croatia in World Group first round February 2-4, 2018
– Croatian hosts have selected an indoor clay court for the tie
Toronto, November 29, 2017 – Canada will play its 2018 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first-round tie against Croatia on an indoor clay court in the city of Osijek, Croatia. The Croatian Tennis Association, who will organize the tie, announced the location this morning. Canada and Croatia will face off from February 2-4, 2018 at the Sportska Dvorana Gradski Vrt.
Osijek, located in the eastern part of the country, most recently hosted Croatia’s first-round tie versus Spain earlier this year, with the hosts falling 3-2. Canada and Croatia will be playing each other for the first time in Davis Cup history, with the winner advancing into the quarter-finals.
Canada will be aiming to advance past the first round for the first time since 2015. The team earned its spot in the World Group for a seventh straight year following a 3-2 victory over India in the play-offs in September. The players set to compete in February will be announced closer to the tie.
Davis Cup by BNP Paribas, known as the World Cup of Tennis, is the largest annual international team sport competition in the world. This year, 125 nations participated with the Top 16 countries comprising the World Group and playing for the right to be named Davis Cup champion.
