Montreal, August 26, 2014 – Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC) advanced to the second round of the U.S. Open on Tuesday thanks to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Olga Govortsova of Belarus.
The two players were meeting for the second time with Bouchard winning the first confrontation between the two at Washington in 2012. Bouchard and Govortsova were on serve in the first set until 3-2 when the Canadian generated the initial break of the match. Bouchard continued to dominate her opponent to post a convincing win in 59 minutes. This her 17th win at the Grand Slams this season. Bouchard will face Romania’s Sorana Cirstea, ranked no. 80 in the world, in the second round on Thursday. Cirstea beat her Brit Heather Watson 6-1, 6-1 in her opening match.
Frank Dancevic (Niagara Falls, ON) will begin his U.S. Open campaign on Wednesday against no. 32 seed Joao Sousa of Portugal.
