The 19-year-old reaches her first Grand Slam Round of 16
Montreal, January 17, 2014 – Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC) was trying to reach her first Grand Slam fourth round on Friday the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Despite the grandeur of the moment, the 19-year-old Canadian didn’t show any signs of nerves in the match, putting forth a dominant display en route to a 6-2, 6-2 victory. In the 77-minute match, Bouchard hit 18 winners compared to seven for her opponent. She has not lost a set in three matches this week.
Bouchard becomes the first Canadian woman to reach the fourth round at the Australian Open since 1999 and the first Canadian to reach the Round of 16 at a Major since 2009 when Aleksandra Wozniak made the second week at Roland-Garros. The tournament’s no. 30 seed will next face the winner of the third round match between China’s Jie Zheng and Aussie Casey Dellacqua.
Bouchard will return to the court on Friday for her opening women’s doubles match alongside Vera Dushevina of Russia.
