Montreal, April 4, 2014 – Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC) advanced to her second semifinal of the season on Friday at the Family Circle Cup, a WTA Premier event in Charleston, South Carolina.
One day after beating American Venus Williams, Bouchard earned her second straight win over a former World No. 1, defeating Jelena Jankovic 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in just over two hours. The match featured many long and gruelling rallies. Leading 6-3, 4-3 with a break in the second set, it appeared Bouchard was going to take in straight sets, but Jankovic battled back to force a decisive third set. In the third set, Bouchard went up an early break and managed to hold on to her lead until she finished the match with her second break of the set in the ninth game.
The win is Bouchard’s second over Jankovic. She also beat the Serb in three sets last September in Tokyo. It is also the fourth career Top 10 victory for the 20-year-old Canadian. On Saturday, she will face the winner of the quarter-final encounter between Germany’s Andrea Petkovic and Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic. It will be Bouchard’s second WTA semifinal on clay after reaching the final four in Strasbourg last year.
After Charleston, Bouchard will be heading to Quebec City to lead Canada in their Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group I play-off against Slovakia on April 19 and 20.
