Borges Defeats Nadal to Win Maiden Title in Bastad
Portuguese No. 1 Nuno Borges claimed his maiden career title in Bastad, Sweden on Sunday, defeating legendary Spaniard Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-2.
In a match that lasted one hour and 28 minutes, Borges hit two aces, won 67 percent of his first serve points and broke the Mallorcan on five occasions.
Never facing Nadal on Tour, Borges will move up to No. 42 in the world when the latest rankings are released.
The 27-year-old had entered this week with a 13-17 win/loss record.
Nadal, who was aiming to win his 93rd career title, looked visibly tired throughout the final. The 38-year-old won two tough three set encounters in both the semifinals and quarterfinals.
The Spaniard will be ranked No. 161 on Monday.

EFG SWISS OPEN GSTAAD—Gstaad, Switzerland
No. 6 seed and former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini won his ninth career title on Sunday in Gstaad, Switzerland, defeating Frenchman Quentin Halys 6-3, 6-1.
Powering through to his second title of the season, Berrettini slammed one ace, won 90 percent of his first serve points and hit 22 winners during the 59 minute affair.
Berrettini, who improved to 16-5 on the season, will move up to No. 50 in the world on Monday. The Italian has been ranked as high as No. 6 in the world.
Halys, who was looking to win his first-career title, ousted No. 5 seed Jan-Lennard Struff in the semifinals. The 28-year-old will move up to No. 125 on the computer on Monday.

Hamburg Open—Hamburg, Germany
Frenchman Arthur Fils won the biggest title of his career on Sunday in Hamburg, Germany, defeating defending champion Alexander Zverev 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(1).
Using his quick footwork and court craft to great effort, Fils struck 41 winners, broke serve on one occasion and won 78 percent of his points and net during the three hour and 33 minute match.
Picking up his first victory over Zverev in three meetings, Fils also won the biggest title of his career. The 20-year-old won his first title in Lyon, France in 2023.
Fils will move up to No. 20 on Monday and Zverev will stay at No. 4 in the world.
