Wimbledon—London, England
World No. 1 Ash Barty captured her second grand slam title on Saturday at The All England Club in London, defeating No. 8 seed Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-3. Claiming her biggest title to date at Wimbledon, Barty won 65 percent of her first serve points, struck seven aces and broke serve on six occasions. Adding 30 winners to her victory, Barty failed to serve out the match at 6-5 in the second set, but reestablished her momentum to win the third set in comfortable fashion.
Improving to 6-2 against Pliskova in lifetime meetings, Barty will remain the world No. 1 by over 2000 points over Naomi Osaka when Monday’s rankings are released.
Pliskova, who was aiming to win her first career Major, previously lost the US Open final in 2016 to Angie Kerber. The hard-hitting Czech star has now made the semifinals or better of all four Grand Slams.
