Roland Garros—Paris, France
Unseeded Czech Barbora Krejcikova captured her maiden Grand Slam title on Saturday at the French Open in Paris, France, defeating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Needing one hour and 58 minutes to claim her crown, Krejcikova won 73 percent of her first serve points, hit 34 winners and broke her Russian opponent on six occasions.
Dismissing Elina Svitolina, Coco Gauff and Maria Sakkari earlier in the event, Krejcikova will reach a career high of No. 15 in the world when Monday’s rankings are released. Previously winning one career title, Krejcikova had never faced Pavlyuchenkova on Tour before.
Pavlyuchenkova, who was aiming to win her first career title, will move up to No. 19 in the world when the latest rankings are released. The 29-year-old dismissed Aryna Sabalenka and Victoria Azarenka earlier in the tournament.
