Baez Defends Rio Open Title Over Muller
Argentine Sebastian Baez defended his title at the Rio Open presented by Claro in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Sunday, defeating inform Frenchman Alexandre Muller 6-2, 6-3.
Needing one hour and 25 minutes to prevail, Baez hit three aces, won 73 percent of his first serve points and broke his opponent on five occasions.
Baez, who was defending 500 ATP Tour points this week, will be ranked No. 31 on Monday. The 24-year-old now owns seven Tour titles.
The Argentine will next see action at the Movistar Chile Open in Santiago, Chile next week. He is also the defending champion of that event.
Baez dismissed talented countryman Mariano Navone earlier in Rio.
Muller, who was attempting to win his second title of the season after capturing the title in Hong Kong, China to start the year, dispatched home-country favourite and recent Argentine Open winner Joao Fonseca in opening round action.
Muller, 28, is having the best season of his career and will be ranked No. 41 in the world on Monday. A new career high.
Next week’s ATP Tour events will be featured in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Acapulco, Mexico and Santiago, Chile. The WTA returns with two great events in Merida, Mexico and Austin, Texas.
