Elsewhere, Emil Ruusuvuori got past Corentin Moutet 6-4, 6-2, and Nicolas Jarry defeated Roman Safiullin in three sets.
On the women’s side, former US Open winner Sloane Stephens marched past Elisabetta Cocciaretto 7-5, 6-2 and Jasmine Paolini upset Marta Kostyuk 6-2, 6-1.
Recently completed on a rain-plagued Monday in Mason, Venus Williams recorded her first top 20 victory since 2019 when she ousted Veronika Kudermetova 6-4 7-5.
Williams will next face either Qinwen Zheng or Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
Caroline Wozniacki, Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov will all be in action later today.
Tuesday schedule of play will feature a continuation of first and second-round matches.
