Auger-Aliassime Defeats Shelton at ATP Finals
Wednesday’s results at the ATP Finals final in Turin, Italy saw No. 8 seed Felix Auger-Aliassme pick up his first victory in the event, defeating No. 5 seed Ben Shelton 4-6, 7-6(7), 7-5.
Overcoming the loss of the first set, Auger-Aliassime needed two hours and 26 minutes to advance.
Striking nine aces and winning 77 percent of his first serve points, Auger-Aliassime improved to 2-0 against Shelton in lifetime meetings and 1-1 in the Group Stages of this week’s event.
Auger-Aliassime will next face No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev on Friday.
Zverev will take on No. 2 seed and defending champion Jannik Sinner later today.
On Thursday, top seed Carlos Alcaraz will return to take on home-country favourite Lorenzo Musetti. If Alcaraz defeats the Italian, he will clinch the year-end world No. 1 ranking for 2025.
Alcaraz ousted No. 6 seed Taylor Fritz in two hours and 28 minutes in the first match on Tuesday.
Musetti needed nearly three hours to defeat No. 7 seed Alex de Minaur later in the day in three sets.
Fritz will face de Minaur in the day session on Thursday. Both players can still mathematically qualify for the semifinals.
