Andreeva, Paolini and Zverev Reach French Open Semifinals
Wednesday’s action at the French Open saw a pair of major upsets. First up, Italian sensation Jasmine Paolini reached her first ever Grand Slam semifinal, defeating No. 4 seed Elena Rybakina 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Paolini, who won in Dubai earlier this year, will next face 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva for a place in the finals. Andreeva picked up the win of her life against an ailing Aryna Sabalenka 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4.
Needing two hours and 29 minutes to advance, Andreeva struck four aces, won 57 percent of her first serve points and broke serve on eight occasions.
Andreev leads the Paolini 1-0 in their career head-to-head meetings.
Zverev Reaches Semifinals
No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev reached the semifinals of the French Open on Wednesday, dispatching No. 11 seed Alex de Minaur 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-4.
Zverev, who defeated Rafael Nadal in the first round, will next face No. 7 seed Casper Ruud in Friday’s semifinals.
Ruud advanced to the final four after top seed Novak Djokovic was forced to withdraw with a right knee injury on Tuesday.
Djokovic is hopeful to return to the Tour for the Olympic Games in Paris later this year.
Friday’s other semifinal will be highlighted by No. 2 seed Jannik Sinner taking on No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz.
