Alcaraz to Face Medvedev in Wimbledon Semifinals
Reigning French Open winner and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz reached the semifinals of Wimbledon on Tuesday, defeating Tommy Paul 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.
After losing the first set, Alcaraz steamrolled his American opponent to reach the final four.
Pouring in six aces, winning 75 percent of his second serve points and breaking serve on eight occasions, Alcaraz improved to 3-2 against Paul in lifetime meetings.
Paul recently won the Queen’s Club event in London, England and will be ranked No. 13 in the world on Monday.
Alcaraz will next face Daniil Medvedev for a place in the Wimbledon final.
The Russian defeated an out-of-sorts Jannik Sinner earlier in the day. Needing five sets to advance, Medvedev recorded a 6-7(7), 6-2, 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3 victory.
Alcaraz leads Medvedev 4-2 in career head-to-head matches and dismissed his opponent in their last Wimbledon encounter in straight sets.
Vekic Reaches Semifinals
Croatian star Donna Vekic reached her first-ever Major semifinal on Tuesday, dismissing Lulu Sun 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.
Vekic, who needed two hours and eight minutes to advance, hit 11 aces, won 87 percent of her first serve points and broke her opponent on four occasions.
Sun reached the quarterfinals as a qualifier.
The Croat will next face Jasmine Paolini, who easily defeated Emma Navarro 6-2, 6-1. Paolini reached the finals of last month’s French Open, losing to world No. 1 Iga Swiatek.
Wednesday’s schedule in SW19 will feature Novak Djokovic, Taylor Fritz, Elena Rybakina and Jelena Ostapenko.
