Friday’s action at the Mutua Madrid Open saw top seed Carlos Alcaraz advance to the third round after he ousted Emil Ruusuvuori, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Overcoming a slow start to his title defence, Alcaraz will next face Grigor Dimitrov, who defeated Gregoire Barrere 7-6(6), 7-6(2).
No. 3 seed and two-time Major finalist Casper Ruud wasn’t as lucky, losing to Matteo Arnaldi 6-3, 6-4.
Elsewhere, No. 5 seed Andrey Rublev, No. 10 seed Karen Khachanov and No. 17 seed Borna Coric all advanced to the third round.
Saturday’s schedule at the Magic box will be highlighted by Paula Badosa, Daniil Medvedev, Maria Sakkari and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
