Wimbledon—London, England
Top seed Carlos Alcaraz and defending women’s champion Elena Rybakina both advanced to the second round of Wimbledon on Tuesday.
For Alcaraz, he swept past Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 in one hour and 53 minutes. The Spaniard will next face either Alexandre Muller or Arthur Rinderknech.
Chardy, who was playing in his 14th Wimbledon Championship, participated in his final match as a professional.
The 36-year-old reached a career high of No. 25 in the world in January of 2013.
Elsewhere, defending women’s champion Rybakina dispatched American Shelby Rogers 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. The No. 3 seed will next face Nao Hibino or Alize Cornet.
Last year’s finals Ons Jabeur also reached the second round with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Magdalena Frech.
Rain has played havoc with the matches on the outer courts. Still to come on Tuesday, Aryna Sabalenka will all be in action.
Andy Murray took out countryman Ryan Peniston 6-3, 6-0, 6-1 in his return to Centre Court. Tennis Legend Roger Federer was also in attendance for the encounter. The Swiss great was joined by Kate Middleton and his wife Mirka Federer.
On Court 1, No. 12 seed Cameron Norrie dispatched Tomas Machac 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Norrie made the semifinals in 2022.
No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka finished the day session on Centre Court by blitzing past Panna Udvardy 6-3, 6-1.
