The 20-year-old will next face Jiri Lehecka or Fabian Marozsan for a place in the fourth-round.
Elsewhere, Rolex Monte Carlo winner Andrey Rublev ousted Alex Molten 6-3, 6-4 and No. 15 seed Borna Coric dismissed Thiago Monteiro 4-6, 7-6(8), 7-6(5) in three hours and 33 minutes.
American J.J. Wolf upset No. 14 seed (14) Hubert Hurkacz 6-3, 6-4.
Sunday’s action in Rome will feature top seeds Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek.
