Roland Garros—Paris, France
Monday’s action at the French Open featured two-time former champion Novak Djokovic breeze into the second round of the event, defeating Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-3, 6-2, 7-6(1).
The No. 3 seed will next face Marton Fucsovics, who defeated Hugo Grenier 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3.
Elsewhere, No. 10 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime was ousted in straight sets by Fabio Fognini 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. The Canadian, who made the fourth-round of the event last year, has been injured for a majority of the 2022 season.
No. 14 seed Cameron Norrie, No. 18 seed Alex de Minaur, No. 26 seed Denis Shapovalov all advanced to the second round.
On the women’s side, former US Open winner and French Open finalist Sloane Stephens ousted No. 16 seed Karolina Pliskova 6-0, 6-4.
Later in the day, top seed Carlos Alcaraz and No. 8 seed Jannik Sinner both advanced to the round of 64 with straight set victories.
Alcaraz, who won the US Open last fall in New York City, is playing his first Major since winning his maiden Slam. The 20-year-old had to miss the Australian Open earlier this year due to injury.
Sinner, who has become a major rival to Alcaraz, is still in search of his first-career Grand Slam. The Italian defeated the Spaniard at the Miami Open in March.
Tuesday’s schedule in Paris will feature Iga Swiatek, Daniil Medvedev, Casper Ruud and Elena Rybakina all aiming to reach the second round of the year’s second Grand Slam.
The 2023 French Open will take place from May 28 to June 11 at Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France.
