Sunday’s action at Roland Garros saw two-time former winner Novak Djokovic easily advance the quarterfinals of the event, defeating Juan Pablo Varillas 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
The legendary Serb will next face Karen Khachanov for a place in the semifinals. Khachanov ousted Lorenzo Sonego 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(7), 6-1. Khachanov has now made the quarterfinals or better of the last three Majors.
In other matches, top seed Carlos Alcaraz dismantled Lorenzo Musetti in comfortable fashion, dismissing the Italian 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. Stefanos Tsitsipas will be the Spaniard’s next opponent, he dispatched Sebastian Ofner 7-5, 6-3, 6-0.
On the women’s side, former finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova defeated No. 28 seed Elise Mertens 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-3, and will next face Karolina Muchova. Muchova ousted Elina Avanesyan 6-4, 6-3.
Later in the day, No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka advanced past Sloane Stephens 7-6(5), 6-4, and Elina Svitolina defeated No. 9 seed Daria Kasatkina 6-4, 7-6(5).
Monday’s schedule of play will feature Casper Ruud, Ons Jabeur, Coco Gauff and Alexander Zverev.
