BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells 2026 Draw Preview: ATP, WTA Analysis and Predictions

The 2026 BNP Paribas Indian Wells Draw Preview has arrived for both the ATP and WTA. Carlos Alcaraz has a favorable draw, while his counterpart on the women’s side– world number one Aryna Sabalenka– is looking at a nightmarish path.

Other considerations: The weather in the California desert and the tournament’s new ball this year– Dunlop, which some players say can fluff up more quickly. Unlike last year’s aberration, the forecast does not call for rain, and temperatures look very hot during the day in week 2. Of course nights are typically cold, and the air is heavy, slowing things down considerably.

To the 2026 BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells Draw Preview.

Alcaraz On A Heater

Alcaraz, who has a perfect 12-0 start in 2021, has drawn Novak Djokovic on his side of the 2026 BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells draw. The high seeds in his quarter include Alex De Minaur and Alexander Bublik. This can be considered a favorable draw for the top-ranked Carlitos because De Minaur has a subpar 9-7 career record at Indian Wells and doesn’t play as well with the high bounce.

Elsewhere in this section, Casper Ruud would normally take advantage of his topspin here, but he’s been out of form since the birth of his first child.

Further down in this section, on the slow, gritty courts here, Bublik’s crushing serve isn’t as potent.

My circled first-round match in this section is Terence Atmane versus the graceful veteran Grigor Dimitrov. My dark horse in this quarter is Sebastian Korda, who looks well conditioned coming off a win in Delray Beach last month. Dark horse 2a is Nuno Borges, a quietly emerging star on the ATP Tour.

Indian Wells Draw Preview: Djokovic Looks For An Edge

Never one to play out any kind of string, Djokovic continues to look for any advantages to counter his age against the new elites of Alcaraz and Sinner. Even though he beat Sinner in the semifinals of the Australian Open, it wasn’t easy. As an avid consumer of information, Djokovic has been looking for tendencies against the likes of Alcaraz, Sinner and other top players, according to sources. He’s also looking to make adjustments to his own game, as always.

In the Djokovic quarter, the next-highest seed is Indian Wells champion Taylor Fritz, who has never beaten Novak in 11 tries. I’m selling Fritz short in this particular tournament. Besides his strains and pulls, Fritz has taken to social media to engage in flamewars with fans. That might be a signal he’s unfocused.

After a bye, Djokovic might have to face hot serving Giovanni Mpteshi Perricard, if he comes through his first round match. Whether or not that one would give Djokovic trouble might depend on the heat and/or whether it’s a night match, where GMP’s serve would be significantly slowed.

The other major tricky potential opponent in this section is last year’s Indian Wells champ Jack Draper, who might meet Djokovic in round 4. Nobody is sure what the lefty has got yet. This is not an easy draw for Djokovic, but manageable.

My Round 1 circled match is Alejandro Tablio against rising star Rafael Jodar, and in fact, Jodar is also my upset special not only in that match but also against Daniil Medvedev, who has been stranded in Dubai amid the conflict in the Middle East.

It’s There For Alexander Zverev

In the bottom half, Alexander Zverev benefits from the turbulence on the global stage because Andrey Rublev is also struggling to travel to California.

Zverev has a 13-9 record at Indian Wells– never his best tournament, for whatever reason. He has only a pair of quarterfinals as his best results. But if he’s going to make a run, this might be the year. Lorenzo Musetti is other the high seed in his quarter. With a one-handed backhand, the high bounce makes him vulnerable.

My dark horse is Canadian Gabriel Diallo, whose monster serve and big ball striking might benefit from some hot day matches if he’s lucky.

Sinner’s Tough Draw at Indian Wells 2026

World number two Jannik Sinner would meet Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals if chalk holds. That’s that tough one because Shelton’s big lefty kick plays well here, and the weather forecast looks to heat up significantly in week 2. Sinner’s track record in scorching temperatures is infamous.

But before that would happen though, Shelton might have to beat rising American Learner Tien, who should have loads of crowd support in his home state. Tien is my dark horse.

My circled first-round match in this quarter is Joao Fonseca against Raphael Collingon. These are two exciting young players whose true potential hangs in the balance.

My players to watch coming through:
QF: Alcaraz, Djokovic, Zverev, Shelton
SF: Alcaraz, Shelton
F: Alcaraz

A last word about Alcaraz. According to ATP stats, his percentage of points played in 4 shots or less is 68%. That’s the same as Sinner– they’re above the tour average. That’s not surprising. Great players win that category overwhelmingly. But within those short points, Sinner and Alcaraz start to diverge. If you take out points that end on the serve or return, Sinner is still above the tour average, while Alcaraz is below. What does it mean? Essentially Alcaraz’s points tend to end on the serve plus one shot and/or the return plus one shot. Those are shots #3 and #4 in a rally. On a slower court where rally lengths tend to tick up ever so slightly, advantage Alcaraz.

Women’s Indian Wells Draw Preview

On the women’s side, Aryna Sabalenka has been dealt a nightmarish draw for the BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells 2026. The world number one hasn’t played since her finals run at the Australian Open. Threats in her quarter include Canadian teen sensation Victoria Mboko, former Indian Wells champion Naomi Osaka and up-and-coming American standout Iva Jovic.
To make matters even more difficult for Sabalenka, she might play Amanda Anisimova in the quarterfinals. The American holds a 6-5 H2H over the Belarusian, though Sabalenka has won their last two meetings.

The 4 seed Coco Gauff lands on the same side as Sabalenka. Gauff, who continues to struggle with her serve, gets Ekaterina Alexandrova, Jasmine Paolini and Clara Tauson in her quarter.

In addition Alex Eala, the global sensation from the Philippines finds herself in this quarter which features a stark diversity of playing styles.

In the bottom half, three-seed Elena Rybakina has arguably the easiest draw, save for Jessica Pegula who anchors the other end of this quarter. Rybakina is a former champion in the California desert and knows how to take advantage of conditions here.

Elsewhere in this quarter, Madison Keys could play Venus Williams in a sentimental match if the wild card Venus advances past her first round match.

Finally, world number two Iga Swiatek has also been socked with a challenging draw. Names in her quarter include: The Doha champ Karolina Muchova, 2025 Indian Wells champion Mirra Andreeva, and Elina Svitolina.

Players to watch coming through:
QF: Osaka, Paolini, Rybakina, Swiatek
SF: Osaka, Rybakina
F: Rybakina

Indian Wells BNP Paribas 2026 Draw Preview: Who Landed Where

This can be considered a favorable draw because De Minaur has a subpar 9-7 career record at Indian Wells and doesn’t play as well with the high bounce. Djokovic Lands On Same Side As Alcaraz

Jannik Sinner: Indian Wells Draw

Easiest Quarter: Alcaraz. Toughest Quarter: Djokovic.
