Tiafoe, Shelton and Kostyuk Advance at Cincinnati Open
Americans Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton advanced to the second round of the Cincinnati Open on Tuesday in straight sets.
Tiafoe collected an impressive 6-3, 7-6(6) victory over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Shelton defeated Reilly Opelka 7-6(3), 7-6(3).
Shelton withstood 19 aces from his towering opponent and will next face either Tomas Martin Etcheverry or Matteo Arnaldi.
Tiafoe will take on Nicolas Jarry or Lorenzo Musetti for a place in the round of 32.
Earlier in the day, Zhizhen Zhang used his athletic game to offset the powerful serve of Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, 6-3, 7-6(4).
Overcoming 13 aces, Zhang hit 18 winners and broke serve on three occasions.
Zhang will face recent Montreal Masters finalist Andrey Rublev in the second round.
Luciano Darderi picked up an impressive victory over Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, defeating the 27-year-old 6-3, 7-6(5).
Other men’s winners on the day included Jordan Thompson, Sebastian Baez, Jiri Lehecka and Alex Michelsen.
Pliskova Shines in Ohio
Former winner Karolina Pliskova rolled into the round of 32, defeating Viktoriya Tomova 7-6(3), 7-6(3).
Pliskova hit six aces and won 64 percent of her first serve points. The former world No. 1 will face No. 11 seed Emma Navarro or Mirra Andreeva for a place in round of 16.
Varvara Gracheva secured a hard-fought victory over Ajla Tomljanovic, dismissing the Australian 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(5).
Other women winners on the day included No. 9 seed Daria Kasatkina, No. 15 seed Marta Kostyuk and Lulu Sun.
Kostyuk, who hit four aces on the day, defeated Elise Mertens 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
