National Bank Open—Canada

Korda, Rublev Advance at National Bank Open

Saturday’s action-packed day at the National Bank Open featured a slew of matches that were carried over from Friday’s severe storm.

First up, inform American Sebastian Korda took out countryman Taylor Fritz 6-4, 7-6(4).

Needing one hour and 37 minutes to advance, Korda hit seven aces, won 74 percent of his second serve points and struck 24 winners throughout his straight set victory.

Korda, who won the biggest title of his career last week in Washington, D.C., will next face No. 6 seed Casper Ruud later in the day.

Other winners so far on Saturday included Arthur Rinderknech reaching the round of 16 after dismissing Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-2.

Cobolli had reached the finals in Washington last week, losing to Korda. The Italian defeated hometown favourite Felix Auger-Aliassime in his first match.

No. 5 seed Andrey Rublev breezed into the quarterfinals after dispatching American Brandon Nakashima 6-2, 6-2.

Rublev will await the winner of top seed Jannik Sinner or Chilean Alejandro Tabilo.

Returning to action after recent knee surgery, No. 4 seed Hubert Hurkacz defeated Thanasi Kokkinakis in a nail-biter, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(6).

Hurkacz will take on Rinderknech later in the day.

Toronto Quarterfinal Set for Saturday

Saturday’s quarterfinal matches at the National Bank Open in Toronto, Canada featured No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka losing to Amanda Anisamova 6-4, 6-2.

The upset by the American will land her in the semifinals against fellow American Emma Navvaro.

Navarro ended the hopes of Taylor Townsend 6-3, 7-5(5).

No. 3 see Jessica Pegula used her experience later in the day to defeat Peyton Stearns 6-4, 7-5.

Pegula will next face either Diana Shnaider or Liudmila Samsonova.

Shnaider poured in a glorious performance on Friday evening in Toronto, defeating top seed Coco Gauff in two easy sets.
