Osaka, Andreescu and Berrettini Win Grass Court Openers
Former Grand Slam winners Naomi Osaka and Bianca Andresscu began their grass-court seasons in style on Tuesday, advancing to the second round in comfortable fashion.
Osaka defeated No. 4 seed Elise Mertens 6-2, 6-4 and Andresscu needed three sets to overcome Eva Vedder 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Other winners on the day included top seed Jessica Pegula. The American returned to the action and ousted Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-2, 6-2 in 58 minutes.
Berrettini Returns to Favourite Grass Courts
Italian star Matteo Berrettini returned to the ATP Tour in style on Tuesday, defeating No. 8 seed Roman Safiullin 7-6(8), 5-7, 7-5.
Needing two hours and 55 minutes to advance, Berrettini slammed 27 aces, won 72 percent of his first serve points and broke serve on one occasion.
Berrettini will next face Denis Shapovalov from Canada. Shapovalov ousted Matteo Martineau 7-6(5), 7-5.
Other winners on the day included No. 5 seed Lorenzo Musetti, James Duckworth, Brandon Nakashima and Arthur Rinderknech.
