Cheering for your favorite tennis player means not only wishing him victory in all the tournaments in which he participates, but also hoping that he can become the best at the end of the season. The championship race helps determine the success of an athlete in a calendar year – it shows how the player performed at the best competitions of the specified period.
Tennis, as an individual sport, is especially unpredictable, but we will still try to assess the chances of the main candidates. Let us immediately note that the situation in the ATP is quite confusing, and everything can still change. We will consider tennis players in the order of how they are ranked in the race right now. Jannik Sinner
Since we are talking specifically about the current season, it is fair to start the analysis with a tennis player who already has the most recent Grand Slam title at his disposal. The 22-year-old Italian has never reached such heights before, but it would be hard to say that he was just lucky at the Australian Open, because he knocked out such titans as Djokovic (getting old?) and Medvedev. Sinner is not yet the first in the singles rankings, but he can and should fight for further success.
The main points are earned at Grand Slam tournaments, so it is worth predicting how Sinner will perform at them. Despite his January triumph in Australia, bookmakers don’t have much faith in his future achievements – here’s how they assess his claims to new titles:
- Roland Garros – 5.5 (fourth contender);
- Wimbledon – 4.33 (third);
- US Open – 4.5 (third).
In short, the leadership captured at the start of the season will not be easy to maintain.
Daniil Medvedev
The 28-year-old “neutral” Russian also did serious work at the Australian Open – he defeated Hurkacz and Zverev, losing only to the shot Sinner. This was his third Australian final, and all of them invariably ended in defeat. However, there was also a reason for great pride in his career – the US Open trophy won in 2021. In the singles rating, Daniil is third, but as the season progresses he may well become either second or fourth.
However, bookmakers believe even less in the development of Medvedev’s success than in the case of Sinner:
- French Open – 12.0 (sixth contender);
- Wimbledon – 13.0 (fourth);
- US Open – 8.0 (fourth).
If Daniil does not start convincing bookmakers and fans as soon as possible, his victory in the championship race looks unlikely.
Alexander Zverev
The 26-year-old German tennis player only reached the semifinals of the Australian Open, giving way to the aforementioned Medvedev, but Alexander also has the fresh scalp of an eminent opponent – Alcaraz was defeated in the quarterfinals. The guy doesn’t have any Grand Slam trophies (yet?), and he’s sixth in the singles rankings – but at the same time third in the race at the moment.
In terms of quotes for Grand Slam tournaments, things are even worse for him than those we reviewed above:
- Roland Garros – 13.0 (eighth contender);
- Wimbledon – 29.0 (seventh);
- US Open – 26.0 (sixth).
We conclude that Alexander, apparently, at the current moment, has jumped above his usual level – and either he will not hold it, or there will be a sensation.
Novak Djokovic
Everything comes to an end someday – even athletes who have become world number one eight times, with 24 Grand Slam titles, are forced to succumb to age sooner or later. We are not writing off Djokovic at all, but he is already 36 years old, and at his almost home Aus Open, Novak lost to his first opponent from the top 10 – albeit to the one who would later become the champion. While holding the lead in the classic rankings, the Serbian is now only fourth in the race.
But he has every chance to still win it! Bookmakers estimate his claims for the remaining Grand Slam tournaments this season as follows:
- second (3.25) most likely contender for triumph in France;
- the second (but already with a coefficient of 2.75) candidate for success in England;
- most likely (2.25) to win the US Open.
So the man who made millions of spectators fall in love with tennis will dust himself off!
Who else is the favorite?
We promised to describe the chances of tennis players depending on what place they currently occupy in the race. Alcaraz is only tenth due to an early exit to Zverev at the Australian Open, but he is considered the main contender for the Roland Garros (2.5) and Wimbledon (2.5) trophies, as well as the second most likely winner of the US Open (2 ,62). All that remains is to live up to your expectations! In the classic ranking, the Spaniard is second.
You shouldn’t discount people like Rublev, Rune, Hurkacz, Fritz and Tsitsipas, and even Nadal (last but not least!), but this is more of a theoretical sensation.
Our forecast
Objectively, it all depends on how old Djokovic is. If Novak can still demonstrate at least most of his capabilities, then he will win the race. If he does get old, then either Alcaraz must live up to the huge expectations from his performances, or Sinner will be able to maintain his lead until the end.
