Djokovic Captures Tel Aviv Crown; Nishioka Wins Seoul Title; Huesler Claims Sofia Open

Former World No. 1 Novak Djokovic won his third title of the season and 89th overall on Sunday in Tel Aviv, Isreal, defeating No. 2 seed Marin Cilic 6-3, 6-4.

Needing one and 35 minutes to prevail, Djokovic struck seven aces, won 89 percent of his first serve points and broke the serve of his Croatian opponent on two occasions. Improving to 19-2 against Cilic in lifetime meetings, Djokovic is currently ranked No. 7 in the world.

The Serb was playing in his first official tournament since winning at Wimbledon.

Cilic, who currently ranked No. 14 in the world, defeated Dominic Thiem earlier in the event.

Eugene Korea Open Tennis Championships—Seoul, Korea

Japanese star Yoshihito Nishioka captured his second career title on Sunday in Seoul, Korea, dismissing Canadian Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 7-6(5).

Withstanding five aces from his opponent, Nishioka won 79 percent of his second serve points and broke serve on two occasions.

Improving to 2-0 against Shapovalov in lifetime meetings, Nishioka will be ranked No. 41 in the world on Monday.

Shapovalov, who was in search of his second career title, defeated No. 8 seed Jenson Brooksby in the semifinals. Shapovalov will be ranked No. 22 in the world on Monday.

Sofia Open—Sofia, Bulgaria

Swiss veteran Marc-Andrea Huesler won his first career title on Sunday, ousting No. 5 seed Holger Rune 6-4, 7-6(8) at the Sofia Open in Bulgaria.

Needing one and 42 minutes to prevail, Huesler used his powerful baseline game to overpower his Danish opponent.

Huesler, who was playing in his first career final, defeated No. 2 seed Pablo Carreno Busta and No. 4 see Lorenzo Musetti earlier in the tournament. The 26-year-old will be ranked No. 64 in the world on Monday

Winning the BMW Open in Munich earlier this year, Rune was in search of capturing his second title of 2022. The 19-year-old will be ranked No. 26 in the world when the latest rankings are released.
