Sinner Upsets Alcaraz to Win Umag Title; de Minaur Captures Atlanta Title

Italian Jannik Sinner won his first title of 2022 on Sunday in Umag, Croatia, dismissing top seed Carlos Alcaraz 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-1.

In a contest that featured two future Grand Slam winners, it was Alcaraz who won a the tight opening set in the tiebreaker, courtesy of an unreturned running forehand.

However, Sinner proved all too strong in sets two and three, breaking serve on four occasions to improve to 2-1 in their head-to-head meetings.

Sinner, who now owns six career titles, improved to 6-1 in championship matches.

The Italian will remain No. 10 in the world when Monday’s rankings are released.

Alcaraz will move up to No. 4 in the world on Monday. A new career high.

Australian Alex de Minaur won his second career title in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday, defeating eclectic American Jenson Brooksby 6-3, 6-3.

In a match that featured two players that rely heavily on court movement and feel, it was de Minaur who used his experience and superior fitness to outlast his younger opponent.

Winning 64 percent of his first serve points and striking four aces, de Minaur also broke serve on four occasions. Moving up to No. 21 in the world, de Minaur now owns six career titles.

Brooksby, who was aiming to win his first career title, fell to 0-3 in championship matches. The American will be ranked No. 37 on Monday.
