Bencic Wins Gold Medal at Olympic Games; Svitolina, Carreno Busta Capture Bronze Medals

Olympic Games—Tokyo, Japan

Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic captured the women’s gold medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan on Saturday, defeating Czech star Marketa Vondrousova 7-5, 2-6, 6-3. Capturing the biggest title of her career, Bencic continued her incredible form in the finals, which saw her dismiss French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova earlier in the event.

Striking numerous winners and using her serve to great effect, Bencic rebounded nicely after dropping the second set in comfortable fashion. Vondrousova, who had defeated home-country favourite Naomi Osaka in the third, made the French Open final in 2019.

Elsewhere, newly married Elina Svitolina captured the bronze medal over Elena Rybakina 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4, while Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta won the bronze medal on the men’s side by defeating top seed Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-3.

Djokovic, who was attempting to win the Golden Slam this year having claimed the first three Majors of the season, later pulled out of the mixed doubles bronze match, citing numerous injuries. The legendary Serb will now attempt to regroup as he heads to the US Open in search of his fourth-straight Grand Slam title.
