Monfils Defends Rotterdam Title; Edmund Claims New York Crown; Ruud Wins Buenos Aires Event

Gaël Monfils defeated Darian King in the second round of the 2017 BNP Paribas Open.

No. 8 seed Kyle Edmund claimed his second career title on Sunday in New York, New York, dismissing Italian Andreas Seppi 7-5, 6-1.

Returning to the ATP Tour after injury, Edmund used his potent forehand and attacking serve to offset his experienced opponent.

Needing one hour and 21 minutes to win his title, Edmund won 83 percent of his total service points, broke serve on three occasions, and never faced a break point against his own delivery.

Moving up to No. 45 in the rankings, Edmund improved to 7-3 on the season.

Seppi, who was attempting to win his fourth career title, defeated Steve Johnson and Jordan Thompson earlier in the event.

Argentina Open—Buenos Aires, Argentina

Norway’s Casper Ruud captured his maiden ATP Tour title on Sunday in Buenos Aires, Argentina, dispatching lucky loser Pedro Sousa 6-1, 6-4.

Arriving into the finals as the clear favorite for the title, Ruud won 84 percent of his first serve points, and controlled the tempo of the match from the baseline.

Having his training base at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Spain, Ruud’s pedigree on clay-courts was evident throughout the encounter.

As a result of his victory, Ruud will hit a career high ranking of No. 34 on Monday.

Sousa, who entered the event with a 12-20 career record and a ranking of No. 145 in the world, will move up to No. 107 as a result of his efforts throughout the week.

ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament—Rotterdam, Netherlands

No. 3 seed Gael Monfils defended his Rotterdam title in Sunday, defeating up-and-comer Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-2, 6-4.

Needing one hour and 26 minutes to claim his title, Monfils hit five aces, won 71 percent of his first serve points, and broke serve on four occasions. Having the opportunity to win the event up 6-2, 5-1 up, Monfils encountered resistance from his younger opponent as he eventually needed five match points to seal his victory.

Winning the title in Montpellier last week, Monfils now owns 10 career titles and two on the season.

Auger-Aliassime, who was playing in his fourth career final, defeated Grigor Dimitrov and Pablo Carreno Busta earlier in the event.
