Citi Open—Washington, DC, U.S.A.
Unseeded Australian Nick Kyrgios won his sixth career title on Sunday in Washington, D.C., upsetting No. 3 Danill Medvedev 7-6(6), 7-6(4).
Using his potent serve and powerful forehand to offset his Russian opponent, Kyrgios won 84 percent of his first serve points and 65 percent of his second serve points. Slamming 18 aces during the one hour and 34 minute encounter, Kyrgios improved to 2-0 against Medvedev in lifetime meetings.
Defeating top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinals, Kyrgios improved to 18-10 on the season. The Australian won his fifth career title earlier in the year in Acapulco, where he dismissed top seeded Rafael Nadal en route to the title.
Medvedev, who has enjoyed a glorious 2019, currently stands at No. 10 in the world after reaching his fourth final of the year. The 23-year-old took home the title in Sofia, Bulgaria in February.
