Miami Gardens, FL (February 13, 2019) – The Miami Open presented by Itaú today announced that 2013 tournament finalist David Ferrer has been awarded one of the tournament’s five men’s main draw wildcards. In addition, the tournament announced the eight women’s main draw wildcards, which includes 14-year-old Coco Gauff.
The Miami Open takes center stage at its new home at Hard Rock Stadium. The best two weeks of tennis starts in Miami with art, music, fashion, food and the most dynamic tennis in the world. The tournament kicks-off Monday, March 18 and concludes with the women’s final on Saturday, March 30 and the men’s final on Sunday, March 31. Highly respected amongst his peers and always a fan favorite, Ferrer has 27 career titles and achieved a career-high world ranking of No. 3 after a competitive 2013 season which saw him as a finalist in both Miami and Paris as well as a quarterfinal or better finish in each Grand Slam for the year. He finished seven seasons ranked in the Top 10 and is one of four active players with 700+ wins (Djokovic, Federer and Nadal); and has the most victories (331) on clay behind only Nadal.
Ferrer, who will be retiring after the 2019 season, joins an impressive field of competitors including World No. 1 and six-time Miami Open champion Novak Djokovic, 20-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer, fellow countryman and 17-time Grand Slam champ Rafael Nadal and many more.
Other men receiving wildcards into the main draw include Miomir Kecmanovic, Nicola Kuhn, Chun Hsin “Jason” Tseng and Chris Eubanks.
On the women’s side, the Miami Open granted one of its eight main draw wildcards to 14-year-old American Cori “Coco” Gauff. At the age of 13, Coco reached the 2017 US Open girls’ singles final, becoming the youngest-ever finalist at the event. In 2018, Gauff won the French Open girls’ title, capturing her first career junior Grand Slam championship and becoming the youngest winner of the junior title in Paris since Martina Hingis’s second win in 1994.
The Miami Open also granted women’s main draw wildcards to Caty McNally, Mari Osaka, Olga Danilovic, Xinyu Wang, Xiyu Wang, Whitney Osuigwe, and Natalia Vikhlyantseva.
The 2019 women’s player field features 11 women who have won Grand Slam singles titles including 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka, winner of the last two Grand Slam events in New York and Melbourne.
In addition to the main draw wildcards, the tournament also awarded five men’s wildcards and five women’s wildcards into the qualifying tournament.
Fans should prepare for the most electrifying two weeks of tennis at the tournament’s new home at Hard Rock Stadium, March 18-31, 2019.
