Montreal, August 6, 2017 – The Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who was scheduled to play his first match during the Tuesday afternoon session, will in fact make his debut Wednesday evening at Rogers Cup presented by National Bank.
The tournament’s top seed, who could retake the World No. 1 ranking by reaching the Rogers Cup semi-finals, will face the winner of the match between Borna Coric of Croatia and Mikhail Youzhny of Russia, who lost in the second round of qualifying, but received an invitation into the main draw after Gilles Muller withdrew from the tournament. One of his potential opponents is currently dealing with a minor injury and has therefore asked to play his first-round match on Tuesday rather than tomorrow.
The main draw begins tomorrow
The main draw will be launched on Monday with a full schedule of matches. As of 12:30 p.m., Australian Nick Kyrgios and Viktor Troicki of Serbia will face-off in the first match on Centre Court. They will be followed by the match-up featuring Frenchman Gaël Monfils and American Steve Johnson. In the evening, starting at 6:30 p.m., Argentinian Juan Martin del Potro, silver medalist at last year’s Rio Olympics, will take on big serving American John Isner, who recently took home the titles in Newport and Atlanta. The final match of the day will be an all-Canadian battle, opposing Peter Polansky and Vasek Pospisil. The winner of this match will have to face Roger Federer in the second round.
Rogers Cup presented by National Bank is a prestigious tournament administered by Tennis Canada and which welcomes, year after year, the biggest stars in professional tennis. In 2017, the men’s event will be held in Montreal from August 4-13 at Uniprix Stadium while the women will be in Toronto from August 5-13 at Aviva Centre.
