Montreal, May 1, 2014 – Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC) and Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON), both seeded second at the Portugal Open were trying to reach the semifinals and the quarter-finals respectively on Thursday at the combined ATP World Tour 250 and WTA International Series event.
Raonic advanced to his fourth consecutive quarter-final of the season thanks to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay. Raonic’s break of serve in the fourth game of the opening frame set the tone and he never let his opponent into the match. Raonic lost just eleven points on serve in his 67 minute victory, five of which came on double faults. In Friday’s quarter-finals, he will face the winner of the match between Poland’s Lukasz Kubot and Argentine Carlos Berlocq. The world no. 9 is looking to capture his first ATP title on clay.
For her part, Bouchard was trying to advance to her third semifinal of 2014. The world no. 18 was defeated 6-4, 6-1 in the quarter-finals by two-time Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia. Bouchard took a 4-1 lead in the opening set, but went on to lose eleven of the final twelve games. She now holds a 5-2 record on clay this season. Her next tournament will be the Mutua Madrid Open in Spain beginning Sunday.
