Abanda gets a qualifying wildcard

Montreal, March 12, 2014 – Following an excellent tournament in Indian Wells where she reached the Round of 16 before falling 6-1, 6-4 to top-seeded Na Li of China, Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) can now look forward to the Sony Open in Miami, Florida.

Wozniak, who has just played her last of eight allotted tournaments with her injury protected ranking of no. 41, the ranking she held before her shoulder injury, has been awarded a main draw wildcard for Miami. Tennis Canada obtained the wildcard through a trade with the IMG agency, receiving one main draw and one qualifying wildcard in exchange for a qualifying wildcard at the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank as well as main draw wildcards at the women’s challengers in Vancouver, Saguenay, and Toronto.

Currently ranked no. 241 in the world, Wozniak should move to somewhere around no. 180 with the 120 points she earned at the BNP Paribas Open. This jump will allow her to play qualifying at Roland-Garros in May, the Grand Slam where she has enjoyed the most success in her career.

Françoise Abanda (Montreal, QC) will receive the qualifying wildcard for Miami. The 17-year-old, who won her first professional tournament this year at a challenger in Florida, will be making her first appearance at the Sony Open which begins next week.

Following her three set loss to world no. 7 Simona Halep or Romania yesterday, Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC) will now head to Florida to get ready for the Miami event. Thanks to her Round 16 showing in Indian Wells, she should achieve a new career-high ranking on Monday.
