Spanish phenom Carlos Alcaraz won his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open on Sunday, defeating No. 5 seed Casper Ruud 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(1), 6-3.
Needing three hours and 20 minutes to complete his victory, Alcaraz struck 14 aces, won 74 percent of his first serve points and broke serve on three occasions. Hitting 55 winners in total, Alcaraz also improved to 3-0 in head-to-head meetings versus Ruud.
The 19-year-old won three, five set matches entering the finals and will now be ranked world No. 1 in the world on Monday. Alcaraz has had a banner year overall, which has included winning the Miami and Madrid Opens earlier this season.
Ruud with a Tremendous Season
For Ruud, his 2022 season has seen him reach the French Open finals in the Spring and win three other ATP Tour titles.
The 23-year-old from Norway has captured nine titles in total throughout his career and will be ranked No. 2 in the world on Monday.
