Medvedev Wins the ATP Finals
Russian and No. 4 seed Daniil Medvedev won the biggest title of his career on Sunday at the O2 Arena in London, England, defeating US Open winner and No. 3 seed Dominic Thiem 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-4.
After losing the first set, Medvedev changed his strategy by taking pace off his groundstrokes from the back of the court and entering the net on numerous occasions. Needing two hours and 43 minutes to win his title, Medvedev hit 12 aces and won 77 percent of his first serve points. The Russian finally broke serve for a 3-2 lead in the third set and never looked back. Defeating top seed Novak Djokovic in the round robin portion of the tournament, Medvedev took out No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal in the semifinals before defeating Thiem – the No. 3 seed – today.
10 Match Winning Streak
Recently capturing his third Masters 1000 title in Paris, France, Medvedev will carry a 10 match winning streak into the 2021 season. The 24-year-old won 1500 points as a result of not losing a match throughout the week.
Thiem, who lost in last year’s final to Stefanos Tsitsipas, dismissed Djokovic in the semifinals.
Today’s final concludes the strangest year on the ATP Tour, highlighted by the spread of COVID-19.
