US Open—Flushing Meadows, New York
No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal won his fourth US Open title on Sunday in Flushing Meadows, New York, defeating No. 5 seed Daniil Medvedev 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4. Needing four hours and 49 minutes to prevail, Nadal hit five aces, won 77 percent of his first serve points and broke serve on six occasions.
After losing the first two sets, Medvedev began to change his tactics by serving harder and hitting his two-handed backhand down-the-line. Reaching four straight finals during the Summer hard-court season, Medvedev showed his class against one of tennis’s greatest competitors.
Winning over the New York crowd during the past two weeks, Medvedev proved that he will be a force in the men’s game for years to come.
Nadal, who now stands with 19 Major titles, trails Roger Federer by one heading into the 2020 season. The Spaniard won his 12 French Open title earlier this year in Paris, France, after losing in the finals of the Australian Open to Novak Djokovic in January.
