Wimbledon—London, England
World No. 11 Angelique Kerber won her third Major title on Saturday at Wimbledon, defeating 23-time Major winner Serena Williams 6-3, 6-3. In a match that was dominated by the German’s angles and lefty spin, Kerber also broke serve on four occasions and hit 11 winners to five unforced errors. Needing one hour and five minutes to claim her victory, Kerber now owns three of the four Majors on Tour, including the Australian Open (2016) and the US Open (2016).
Williams, who was playing in only her fourth event since becoming a mother, showed many signs that she’s headed straight back to the top of the sport with an appearance in the finals.
Williams was attempting to win her 24th career Major, which would have tied her with Margret Court for the most Majors ever.
Both Williams and Kerber will now set their sights to the hard-courts of North America as they prepare for the US Open, which will take place at Flushing Meadows, New York from August 27-September 9.
