Sinner Captures First Major Title at Australian Open Over Medvedev

Italian star Jannik Sinner captured his maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open on Sunday, defeating No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.

In a match the lasted three hours and 44 minutes, Sinner overcame the loss of the first two sets by using his powerful forehand and improved fitness. The 22-year-old struck 14 aces, won 74 percent of first serve points, hit 50 winners and broke serve on four occasions.

Improving to 4-6 against Medvedev in lifetime meetings, Sinner has now won the last four matches against the former US Open winner.

Defeating 10-time Australian Open winner Novak Djokovic in the semifinals, Sinner will remain at No. 4 in the world when Monday’s rankings are released.

Medvedev, who was aiming to win his second-career Grand Slam, fell to 1-6 in Major finals. The 27-year-old played four, five set matches during the 15 day event.

The professional Tours will now focus on preparing for March Madness, which will include two Masters 1000 events in Indian Wells, California and Miami, Florida.

From there, the best players in the world will have their sights set on the clay-courts of Europe and the year’s second Major at Roland Garros.
