Sinner Upsets Djokovic to Reach Australian Open Final

Italian star Jannik Sinner captured the biggest win of his young career on Friday in Melbourne, Australia, defeating 10-time former winner Novak Djokovic 6-1, 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-3.

Needing three hours and 22 minutes to seal his victory, Sinner hit nine aces, won 83 percent of his first serve points and broke his opponent on five occasions.

Picking up his third victory over Djokovic in nine weeks, Sinner will next face either No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev in Sunday’s final. Medvedev overcame a two sets to love deficit against No. 6 seed Alexander Zverev to advance to his six Grand Slam final.

The former US Open winner needed four hours and 18 minutes to record a 5-7, 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(5), 6-3 victory.

Djokovic, who was aiming to win his 25th career Major, played poor throughout his semifinal clash with Sinner.

The 36-year-old had been showing great signs of picking up yet another Grand Slam title Down Under earlier in the event.

Saturday’s action in Melbourne will feature the women’s final between No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka and No. 12 seed Qinwen Zheng.

Sabalenka is the defending champion of the event, while Zheng is playing in her first-career Major final.

Sabalenka leads the pair’s head-to-head 1-0.
