Zverev Ousts Alcaraz to Reach Australian Open Semifinals; Zheng Advances

Reigning Wimbledon winner Carlos Alcaraz was handed a heavy defeat at the Australian Open on Wednesday, losing in four sets to No. 6 seed Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-4.

Needing three hours and five minutes to advance, Zverev’s flawless performance featured seven aces, 28 winners and 73 percent of his first serve points won.

Improving to 5-3 against Alcaraz in lifetime meetings, Zverev will next face No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev, who ousted No. 9 seed Hubert Hurkacz in five sets and four hours.

Medvedev leads his head-to-head with Zverev at 11 wins to seven defeats.

Elsewhere, Dayana Yastremska defeated Linda Noskova 6-3, 6-4 to reach the semifinals as a qualifier, and No. 12 seed Qinwen Zheng ousted Anna Kalinskaya 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-1. The pair will face off on Thursday for a place in the finals.

Thursday’s other semifinal will feature No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka taking on No. 4 seed Coco Gauff.

Top seed Novak Djokovic will return to the courts on Friday to face No. 4 seed Jannik Sinner for a place to play for his 11th title Down Under.
