Swiatek Crashes Out of Australian Open; Alcaraz, Medvedev Advance to Fourth Round

Top seed and four-time Major winner Iga Swiatek crashed out of the Australian Open on Saturday evening, losing in three sets to world No. 50 Linda Noskova.

In a match that latest two hours and 20 minutes, Swiatek was constantly bombarded by the powerful serving of her opponent, which produced 10 aces.

Noskova will next face No. 19 seed Elina Svitolina, who raced past Viktorija Golubic, 6-2, 6-3.

Elsewhere, two-time former winner Victoria Azarenka advanced, along with talented Chinese star Qinwen Zheng.

Other women’s winners on the day included Dayana Yastremska, Anna Kalinskaya and Jasmine Paolini.

On the men’s side, No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz advanced when his opponent Juncheng Shang was forced to retire with a leg injury trailing 6-1, 6-1, 1-0.

Alcaraz will next face Miomir Kecmanovic, who dispatched last year’s semifinalist Tommy Paul in five sets.

No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev, No. 6 seed Alexander Zverev, No. 9 seed Hubert Hurkacz, No. 19 seed Cameron Norrie and Nuno Borges from Portugal all advanced to the final 16.

Sunday’s action in Melbourne will feature top seed Novak Djokovic, No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka, No. 5 seed Andrey Rublev and No. 4 seed Coco Gauff.
